Coding For Human Rights
The impact of digital technologies on human rights is a critical concern for civil society, citizens and governments today.
From autonomous cars and killer robots, to everyday applications like our smart phone devices, search engines and social media platforms, digital technologies negotiate issues of privacy, discrimination, equity and social justice.
Regulators are scrambling to keep up with the governance of the digital world. While Laws such as EU's General Data Protection Regulation (GDPR) offer citizens legal safeguards for their data, the onus of fighting for their rights still falls on users.
They need to find out if and how big tech companies are exploiting their data and abusing their privacy. And then users need to be able to legally fight against these infractions. That's a lot of work.
But what if protecting for human rights wasn't so difficult? How can the tech community help embed human right protections in these technologies?
Watch Jean discuss how technology can be designed to enhance human rights.
